About Us, introducing the History of the Practice
Wellington Square has been the home of family medical practices since the beginning of the last century. During that time, it has seen many changes including the inception of the National Health Service in 1948. Today the medical Centre is an integral part of the local primary care trust (PCT), which was established in 1999 to enhance the part that GP's play in planning the health needs for the local population.
In recent times our premises have been extended and refurbished to provide modern facilities and space for the growing number of health professionals attached to GP surgeries. In keeping with the latest communication trends, the practices are now fully computerised and linked to both the internet and NHS net.
We are mvoing to one of the governments new 'polyclinics' just outside the station called the Plaza station site next year. We have nearly completed the initial stage of planning and will soon start to consult widely with patients. There is already a group representing patients who have been invovled so far in finalising the plans.
The Station Plaza site is fortunate in some ways to be selected as the site to locate one of the new 'Walk-in Centres' which have been piloted in other parts of the country. This will be open from 8.0am until 8.pm 7 days a week and has brought additional funding into the building which will also house a number of other services. These include mental health, sexual health, chiropody and physiotherapy. In addition we hope to be able to provide DEXA scanning, X-rays, warfarin monitoring and dental services in the bulding.
